Myriads

We ran a 10k last weekend. We've been running for about a month. It's creepy actually. I have a crazy friend who decided to run a marathon for no reason (or maybe to get in shape for his high school reunion). He dragged a bunch of us along with him (I'm running a half - I don't think I feel the need to ever run more than that at once). So we started running, in the mornings, which is something I would not normally do. Ever. But it's been really easy. Shockingly easy. Suddenly it seems like a perfectly normal thing to do.

Is NaNoWriMo like that for anyone? I still haven't been able to win. My personal NaNoWriMo begins some time in July when I start working on new features and fixes in earnest. It continues through the end of November, although it's gotten better each year as things break less, and I get better at patching the leaks.

Big Corn: It's a big, beautiful ear of corn.

I'm hoping that at some point NaNo becomes obvious and natural for me for no good reason.

This ear of corn is also a metaphor for NaNoWriMo, I think...

eat corn (many tasty nuggets to devour)
run (as much as you need to it really does feel good)
write novel in thirty days (gulp!!)

visualize corn (golden and delicious)
visualize running (fifteen or so miles in half a day)
visualize writing 1700 words a day for thirty days
(again gulp)

corn has silk
running shorts are silky
writing 50000 words in under 720 hours
is smooth like butter

this is all so very exciting!!

Rock on!

Give that friend of yours a big pat on the back.

But, put down the corn, first.

I ran a 5K, and I only seem to be able to do flash fiction, do you think there's a connection?

:p

This is going to be my first time doing this and I am very excited. I am glad to hear I am not the only one beginning to prepare and think about things.

If it helps any, I've finished nine novels since I started running marathons. Funny thing is, you end up writing just so you can put off running. See how it works? Or you put off writing so you can run. But if you write a lot of action scenes, nothing like a good long run, with your "novel soundtrack" blasting in your ears to get the plot worked out.

You run now too? There is no end to your talents ;-)

I run too, and if you managed to do a 10K after a month - awe. But I did manage to get a new personal record time for 1 mile at the weekend. Now to just maintain that speed (8:35) for 2 or 3 miles and I'll be happy ;-)

NaNo, here we go!

...10k runs, 1/2 marathons, and nanowrimo every year for the last 5 years - all habits that I do consistantly now.

The difference is, however, that with running, you train regularly. That's how it becomes part of your life. But if you don't write regularly... well, how CAN you expect november to become that month. Even if you're doing Nano stuff from August on - as you are! - it's not like you're in the habit of creative writing every day yet, is it?

In October each year, I spend 30mins every couple of days getting back into writing mode. Scribbling ideas. Pre-emptively hanging out in coffee shops with a notebook. Writing a little (really little - I don't want to use all the words that could count towards the 50,000!), adding on to previous novels or whatever. Then I'm kinda in the habit and have made the time, so when things kick off on Nov 1, I'm ready!

My god, I overprepare, don't I? *shudder*

*Tilts head at corn. Squints.* Well, I think I see what you mean. You look at a ginormous ear of corn and you wonder "double-you, tee, eff?" It's the same way with NaNo. You wonder why anyone would have a part of it, but you look closer and begin seeing the truly delicious and rewarding parts of it.

I think. Or maybe I just haven't had breakfast.

My vote goes to corn for this year's plot ninja! :-))))

I understand. And, I am totally in your corner about not needing to run more than a half marathon! Congrats on doing it, though!

It gets easier every year. But probably not before you actually won once, because that is when you have figured out the secret of locking your inner editor in Baty's closet...

But as long as you can't do that... you can't win and it doesn't get any easier..

So let's hope Baty's hinges hold again this year
(What's that? My own closet? What do you mean?)

You look at the corn and you think, "No. Why would anyone want to do anything with that?" but the fact is that, with a little bit of enthusiasm, and some butter, NaNoWriMo is actually quite filling and nutritious.

I understand, Russ. It's alright.

And yes, I'd agree. NaNoWriMo becomes half as difficult as it seems the second you put pen to paper. It never becomes easy, but it's never as hard as it sounds.

NaNo is definitely like that for me. It just seems completely... normal for me to start writing like that in November, like it's supposed to be like that. It feels like... it's a completely normal routine, even though I only ever normally write 1/10th of that in one month on a normal basis ;)

Well, I guess in a way, NaNoWriMo IS a little bit like running for me. Except for the fact that I HATE running. My point is that running is hard, and in order to do it, I have to play all kinds of mind games with myself and mostly just suck it up and keep on going. That's how writing a novel in a month is: mind games, but mostly just trying to keep going.

So I'm agreeing, kinda. But not about the corn.

The corn thing... I *think* I see it..... Sort of. Maybe. Gimme a few minutes to think about that one...
