Field trip to Babylon!

Chris Baty @ Sat, 2009-08-22 16:46

On Friday, Lindsey and I spent the morning at Babylon Burning, the San Francisco screenprinter who is handling all the NaNoWriMo shirts (and new sweatshirt!) this year. We listened to the Strokes and the Shangri-Las, debated various Pantone colors and design dimensions, and watched as the team there began pulling the first of the new shirts off the line. Thanks so much to Babylon for hosting us! Here are some photos from the big day…

We wanted to make a fun, general purpose NaNoWriMo shirt. Since NaNo feels a lot like camp to us, we asked our graphic design whiz Graham to come up with a design for "Camp NaNoWriMo." What he came up with totally floored us. So good!We wanted to make a fun, new NaNoWriMo shirt. The slogan on the sign (hard to make out here) reads: "An idyllic writers retreat, smack-dab in the middle of your crazy life." We love Graham.

One of the comments we get every year is that we need to offer more shirts for people who aren't participating that year, but who still want to show their support of NaNoWriMo. I really wish I could afford the NaNoWriMo sweatshirt. I've had the same sweatshirt since fifth grade, almost four years now. I love that sweater, I really do.
The NaNo logo one is really cool too. But I wish I could get that sweatshirt!

I gotta love the new merch in store for the 2009 season of NaNoWriMo. The hoodie and the camp nanowrimo shirt is inspiring me in ways that you will see on december 1st. (if there is any snow!). I am definitely buying this year!

Happily anticipating,

I approve of "idyllic" ... Been using that word in the description of the Bay Area Writers Retreat (sans punctuation) for a couple of years now. Nobody's complained about punctuation so far, but copious amounts of bacon and wine will take almost anyone's mind off of such trivia.

Gah, I want one of everything :(
A hoodie will definitely be on its way to me when they come out, November is far too cold for novelling in just a T shirt and jeans :3

HA! you wouldn't believe the debate my writing group got into about that ' . I decided to make a logo for us and the group argued for an hour about that instead of design ideas.

Okay, Mister Baty, it's been "around September 1" for three days now. My constant refreshing has not resulted in an updated store, blog, or breaking news section. Am I going to have to drive out to California to get my shirts?

(I hope not, because I don't have enough gas money for that)

I love it!

On the "writer's retreat" vs. "writers' retreat" vs. "writers retreat" spelling...I've been lucky enough to go attend the Maui Writers Retreat in the past and they spell it without the apostrophe, a la this shirt. (As do, in a quick search, several other established retreats). But then other places go with the "writer's retreat" or "writers' retreat." Funny that an activity so integral to writing could be so indecisive about where to stick its apostrophe.

Do those words all count for my November novel?

Mary

First, I do think the shirts look great, and I can't wait to get me one of those hoodies. :)

But the "Camp NaNoWriMo" shirts worried me a little.

The slogan on the sign (hard to make out here) reads: "An idyllic writers retreat, smack-dab in the middle of your crazy life."

Please tell me there's an apostrophe after "writers". Or is there really now a shirt about novel writing with a big spelling error on it?

Although I guess it's not a retreat for idyllic writers. The retreat itself is idyllic. Should it be idyllic writer's retreat, then? I'm confoozed! But I think there needs to be an apostrophe there somewhere, even if I'm not quite sure where. :(

Oh why did I even read this post? I swear I've never been this excited for a NaNoWriMo E-V-E-R, and this is just like dangling a cure for sleep (that I will need) in front of my face. Words cannot express my anxiousness.

Thanks, guys! We're excited too! I wore my hoodie all day today even though it was way too warm to be wearing it and I looked like an idiot. I was secretly hoping someone would stop me and say: "Wait, there's no such thing as a NaNoWriMo hoodie!"

And then I could have done a bunch of crazy dance moves and finale'd with a moonwalking backflip that rakishly slid the hood over my head. And then I would have smiled at them and said: "There is now, baby!"

But sometimes the day you dream of and the day you get are two different things.

I did eat a nice tamale this afternoon while wearing my hoodie. So that's something.

We're hoping to have the new shirts and sweatshirt in the store around September 1.

The tour looks exciting, the shirts look great, and I can't wait for a NaNo sweatshirt! Don't listen to the naysayers--it does get cold in Georgia in November, and I can't wear a NaNo shirt every day. :)
