"30 Covers, 30 Days" Deconstructed!

Book Covers of our Illustrious Published Wrimos!Book Covers of Some of our Illustrious Published Wrimos!

Ahoy, friends! We introduced the 30 Covers, 30 Days project with an interview with Chris Papasadero of Fwis, the graphic design firm that's going to be creating 30 remarkable book covers for 30 Wrimos' novels throughout the month of November. But if you were wondering how we're going to be choosing those 30 lucky novels, look no further:

All we're asking is that you have a novel title and synopsis proudly displayed on your author's profile. An excerpt, after November 1st of course, would be a definite boost, too. That's it! It's a piece of cake. Or as easy as pie. Or another pastry-based idiom.

We'll be selecting novels being written by Wrimos in different countries and in all kinds of genres. Irish fantasy? Bring it on. Singaporean romance? Fantastic! South African literary fiction? We are 110% on board. From good-old American westerns to Norwegian horror, we want to see it all represented in our gallery of covers.

So keep us in the loop! We'll be browsing through the Novel Info on your author pages here at the office and getting excited for all the powerfully creative stories people are going to be churning out in November. See you then!

Tim

Wow, I hadn't even thought of designing a cover.
It would be freakishly awesome if I got picked. XD
I already consider myself to be lucky, just for getting that e-mail.. that I... just got. :D

Okay, that pumped me up so much, I might be going for 10k words today.

Self-Storage has a really nice cover (well... they all do), but I really like the title How to Knit a Love Story.

I am writing a satire, based on my word count competition with my roommate. I would love to see a professional's thoughts on turning it into a visual medium.

This is such a great idea. I know you only have 30 days among other obligations but I wish the odds weren't so astoundingly high to be picked... But still I look forward to seeing the covers for titles that are chosen.

I'll shameless plug myself, anyhow. http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/540232

This is an amazing concept! Being a graphic designer myself, I think this is such a fun idea. I can only hope that mine is picked!

As others have asked, how will we know if we've been selected?

My novel may be one of the 30!!! May, because they are giving them a total of 60 designs from which they will chose 30.

Oh thank you very much!!! Thats so cool! I am so excited!
Next week Fwis will descide if they want my novel or not.

Is anybody else here in the preselection, too?

Can we, like, put our names in a hat to be drawn for the book covers? I like that idea. *inserts 298 slips of paper with my name on them*

What a great idea. I have a title and rough synopsis (although it will doubtless expand when I start writing) so off to post mine asap! I'm Darcy Raven BTW

That's pretty generous (and will be fun to watch). I uploaded homemade cover art for mine for a little profile flavor, but I'd take a redesign anytime!

Good luck, everyone.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the designers come up with using only the synopsis and (maybe) an excerpt! This will prove to be an entertaining month.

I love this idea! I'm so excited. Please... let me be one of the lucky ones...
Okay, so I'm going to revise my synopsis, make it even more awesome. And there's definitely going to be an extract in my profile after November 1st.
:]
I just love this idea!

Does this mean that our tiltle, synopsis and excerpt have to be written in english ? Because I'm French, and I write in french... Will I have to translate everything ?

Am officially beefing up my synopsis and getting myself a really cool title. Though my story is kind of random. It will either be an awesome challenge or they're going to want to run far, far way (other covers for this sub genre I've seen have mostly been BAD) - either way it will be cool to see all the different covers along the way.

This is quite a brilliant way to get everyone pumped up. I mean, not that it's needed at this point. So close!

Wow, I do not envy the poor folks who have to pick the 30 winners. I've seen some great synopses already--can't imagine what a monumental task this is going to be come November.

Thanks to the generous designers and "Best of luck" to whomever is chosen.

Hi guys! We're all really glad that you guys are getting so excited about this! We're excited, too. We wish we could promise a cover to each and every one of you, but Fwis is taking on an already titanic job in doing 30 Covers in 30 Days. They're awesome, right?

A lot of you have asked for more specifics on how we'll actually be picking Wrimos for the project:

I'm going to be reading synopses, titles and, eventually excerpts and picking those that I think will give Fwis a lot to work with. We're asking them to turn things around pretty quickly, so we want to make sure the novels we send them are graphically inspiring and challenging.

We also want to celebrate the fact that NaNoWriMo gets more and more international every year. We're going to be looking to pick Wrimo's from all over the world, making sure to represent how diverse you guys are.

We'll let you know if you've been picked by contacting you through your author's profiles; most likely through NanoMail.

I hope that clears up any questions. Really, the only thing you need to do to be considered is, like it says in the post, to have a title and synopsis up, and then when November 1st rolls around, to get an excerpt up. That will help a lot.

We're super excited for November, guys! It's going to be bigger than ever this year. I'm a little daunted by the idea of picking from all the amazing novels you'll be writing, but excited too, to get up close and personal with them! Good luck!

Tim

@Frederick Matzen: That sounds awesome! Please, let us know if you decide to go ahead with this and create a site where you post covers for Wrimos' novels. There's a Contact Us form at www.nanowrimo.org/generalcontact. If you flag me in the subject, or 30 Covers, 30 Days, it'll find its way to the right person. Exciting!

Makes me wish my title fit my novel better, and that my synopsis was more than one sentence. :/

Wed, 2009-10-14 08:36

This is exactly the sort of thing WriMos need to keep their heads in the game! Man, what a cool idea. What budding author doesn't dream about how their cool cover will look? Even if (as probability dictates) I don't end up picked, I still look forward to seeing the thirty copacetic covers that come about from this.

If you'd read the Breaking News section on the NaNo homepage, you would know that this compant is doing 30 covers over the course of the month, one for each day. And, each day, the cover will be for a different NaNoer.

Just wanted to shamelessly get noticed. Hailey's Devils would have a cool pulp novel look with guns, a dame, explosions, and an art decco cityscape as a backdrop. But I have no problem leaving the cover design to the pros.

Wed, 2009-10-14 03:20

How exciting! Guess this means I need to think of a better title, then -- my working title isn't very exciting at all!

Will fanfiction be considered, too? I'm doing fanfiction this year (I try to alternate from year to year), and would love a cover...

I have a small one-man, stay-at-home Dad graphic and web design business and I would like do a challenge just like this myself.
To be honest, I have a MUCH better chance of succeeding at this than I do and finishing the NaNoWriMo challenge. I'm not a typist and I can design a good deal faster than I can type.
So what would I do to make this a reality?
I guess if no one official let's me know, I can create a web space for it and let the "winners" know.

This sounds so wonderful!!!! Now only if I was one of the 30.."Hmmm" so far we are up to 15,360 something participants and only 30 are going to be pick. How are they going to be picked? .

Tue, 2009-10-13 17:32

What a brilliant idea! As a NaNo participant who works in graphic design and printing, this delights me on so many levels! I look forward to seeing the results, and good luck!!

Wow, this is a great way to make people write good synopsises? Synopsi? Synopsises? However you pluralize that. :)

I really hope I get picked! Thanks for offering this!

Tue, 2009-10-13 16:37

This is a terrific idea. Not only get the juices flowing on cover design, something I'd say few Wrimo's are considering seeing they have all that typing to do, but it get's us/them to post titles (I find a tile really helps me focus on the story), synopses (hard for those that are just creating as they go, but I like to plan anyway) and excepts (I put these up anyway because I get so excited!).

I look forward to the mad graphic art explosion across November as I attempt the mad literary explosion!
