Pep talk superstars

Chris Baty @ Thu, 2007-01-11 17:29

For NaNoWriMo 2007, we're going to be trying something new on the pep talk front.

Instead of having me write all of them, we're going to invite several dozen well-known novelists to pen the pep talks. When you sign up for NaNoWriMo in October, you get to pick the authors you'd like to get an email from during the month. That way, you could theoretically get a pep talk every day if you wanted, and hear from authors you admire.

Which brings up the important question: What novelists would you like to see on that list? (And yes, they need to be living writers, wise guy).

Let's hear 'em!

Chris

Jodi Picoult would be AH-MAZING. She writes mystery-ish type books that always have just a touch of romance. They almost always involve lots of research, which I think might be something she could share a couple thoughts on, since so many of us have the deep urge to write something so wonderful and complex that it needs lots of research. Obviously we can't do tons and tons of research for Nano, but perhaps she could still offer some useful tips?

...plus, I would just be thrilled. :D

~Jillian

Oh! And I second Ray Bradbury and Meg Cabot, and I think Ann Brashares would be WONDERFUL.

Dave Barry is one of my all-time favorite authors. I am not sure if he qualifies as a novelist per se, but has authored quite a few books and is definitely in the category of "Professional Writer".

OK, so one vote for Dave Barry as an inspirational pep-talker...

Thanks!

Jonathan Lethem
Nicola Griffith
Kate Calloway
Mabel Maney
Gideon Defoe
Chris Baty

Thanks,

I will dance at your wedding if you can get Orsen Scott Card.

ORSEN SCOTT CARD! ORSEN SCOTT CARD! ORSEN SCOTT CARD!

Robin Jarvis would be a good one, especially for those who are writing children's books, or fantasy. (Or both!)

Um.

Heck, I dunno. Steven King? He wrote a really good book about writing... My brother left his copy in a resturant. D:

How about Anne McCaffrey? She's pretty original, and no one pulls off dragons like she does!

And... CHRIS BATY, DUN DUN DUUUUN!

Well, there are quite a lot of brilliant authors out there... so many, that to name a few is almost crazy, but I'm going to give you a couple of names from whom it would give me such a buzz to get an email:

David & Leigh Eddings
Terry Pratchett
Trudi Canavan
Phillip Pullman
God (burning bush would do)

are top of my list. Of course there are more, but these would be 4/5 of my favourites (especially the last, if you can arrange it!)

Ps, finished my 50000 March novel (went on to nearly 70000 by the end of the month - surprising me more than anyone!!!) So, a huge thank you, Chris Batty, for your inspiration. In fact, you should be on the list, so I'm adding you!

According to Wikipedia the NaNoEdMo has moved sites to NaNoEdMo.net instead of .org

I know, because I was about to embark on this mission too! :-)

It doesn't look like the sites been very active this March though, so I don't know whether it's on-going or not.

Hi Chris!

I'm writing to tell you that I've done several lots of washing, the washing up, swept the yard, painted the skirtings in my daughter's bedroom gold (for the umpteenth time!)Why? all in order to avoid writing, of course. (And then, when there's no escape, I write, write, write to avoid doing more housework!)

This downward spiral I have two people to thank for: This guy called Farris Thorne of Freeform Fresno and you!! Farris mentioned he might be doing the NaNoWriMo back in February, and like a fool I said, "Oh, that's a good idea... I think I might do it too!" (What posessed me!!) So, together we embarked on this crazy malarky!

He mentioned your book No Plot, No Problem, so I immediately hopped on the internet shopping site and purchased it (an excellent book, by the way - had me chuckling!)... and of course, that's why I blame you for my madness now - because it inspired me to do what I always wanted to do... that's right - write!

And, I have to add, it has been a pleasure to get in touch with you now, because that has filled another 15 minutes of today that I don't have to either write or do housework :-D

I hope to write you at the end of March with a Yahay! I did it! But, until then, come visit me in my madhouse and beware....

Yes! What a great idea! I would definitely go for pep talks from admirable writers. My fantasy pick all-star writers team:

Ursula K LeGuin
Kurt Vonnegut
Ray Bradbury
Amy Bloom
Umberto Eco
Alison Bechdel (graphic novelists count too, IMHO)
Dorothy Alison
Alice Walker
That guy who wrote House of Leaves, whose name I am always mis-spelling, wait, I'll google it...
Mark Danielewski

I will also happily accept pep talks purporting to be from the late great Philip K. Dick, provided they are addressed to me, personally, and contain things that will Blow My Mind, as well as pep me up.

That being said, I imagine you can't please everyone with their favorite writer, and I just want to say I think its a great idea, no matter which authors you pick.

Brian Jacques, author of the AMAZING Redwall series, would be my top pick! (Redwall.org is his website if you'd like to find out more)

Donita Paul would be another good one. I know she likes interacting with any and all writers(she hosts a weekly chat where people can come and get tips/discuss that week's writing subject) and her DragonKeeper Chronicles are fantastic. :) (DragonKeeper.us is her website, if you want more info. ^^)

Wow. It’s very cool that not one but two people think I could be inspiring. And neither of them is my grandmother.

Anyway, I realize there are much bigger writers on the wish-list, but I’d be happy to do it. I could tell people how, instead of a muse, I have comma gnomes. Surly denizens of the comma mines, their main method of inspiring is to yell things like, “Quit gabbing about inspiration, Fancy-Pants, and get to work! Else, I’ll smack that liberal arts education right outta ya!”

Or I could even talk about something sane.

Anyway, my email is krisreisz@gmail.com is you need me.

I don't know if Joss Whedon actually counts as a novelist, but boy would I love to hear from him!

Orson Scott Card would be fantastic too. He teaches workshops, runs a writers' group forum, and is generally very encouraging to aspiring writers, so maybe he'd be up for it.
