Forum Withdrawal Symptoms

Cybele May @ Tue, 2007-09-25 19:06

It's true, we have many reports of NaNo Forum Withdrawal Syndrome NaNoFoWiSy). Symptoms include twitching, general aches, tendency to send very long emails to friends and of course scribble furiously into a notebook.

I know, it's hard to be without the forums just as we're ramping up into the prep month.

Here are a few ideas for ways to distract yourself for the next week:

1. Proofread your junk mail ... then send it back to them in the postage paid envelope!

2. Plan your wardrobe for November.

3. Plant your own coffee tree.

4. Get ahead on your sleep.

5. Start cooking Thanksgiving dinner now.

6. Re-decorate your workspace.

7. Create a backup plan for your writing.

8. Make more suggestions for productive procrastination here.

Here it is nearly the end of Oct, and I'm STILL suffering from withdrawal.... nearly all the time I can't get in, and when I do... it takes so long my ADD kicks in and I toddle off to do something else.

*sigh* If I can't get in this year, I may be a gonner as it's my biggest support group.

13) Get a few false starts out of your system.

The last time I tried a novel it took me practically a week to get a beginning I was happy with, and everytime I glance at the manuscript the start still makes me baulk.

American writers: Write a novel for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Non Americans (we don't qualify for Pulitzer) go for the Nobel or the Booker Prize. For novels in languages other than English a look around for a suitable award. Get on with it hough, there are less than three weeks left. Then do your NaNo - much harder I know, but the practice is useful

write a few 1000 word short stories so you know the style of story, first person/third person etc that you feel comfortable writing in.

(Good luck Robin)

Find a writing forum linked with NaNo and spam there. :P

Study. (This is all I CAN do. It's so depressing! *sob*)

Plan for next year's NaNo (I did this. No comment.)

Surf the net for amusing NaNo related comics.

Spend an hour meditating and sending happy-muse-like-inspiration-filled rays to Russ, Chris, and the rest of the NaNo team! :)

Eat a pie.

Make a pie.

Keep doing word wars until your fingers are falling off and you have enough novel and essay references for the next ten years.

Use October for a National Novel Finishing Month so you can finish novels that you can't use for NaNoWriMo. =P

Wish kikory lots of luck 'cause this is her first NaNoWriMo and she's writing about the inner workings of her mind and will probably have a nervous break down like twice a week. =P

.Catch up on your reading, even old favorites, and observe how published writers write their books, then remember what you learned.

.line up characters/plots for your story, so when November comes, you won't have to waste time planning everything out, you can just WRITE!

. Wish Robin lots of luck, since she's super-nervous about her first year in NaNoWriMo.

#x. Start your own forum and use this page to invite everyone who is suffering from NaNoFoWiSy to join, at least until the PROPER forums are back up (forumer.com is good for this. I think they're the ones I used when I had to create a forum for class). Just never forget that the forum will only be a temporary thing and eventually the PROPER forums will be back up. *Nods*.

#x+1. Spin in fast circles until you're so dizzy you can't remember your name, let alone why you're having withdrawals.

#x+2. Scream "NANOWRIMO" at the top of your lungs wherever you go. This will serve two purposes: keep your mind on the World's Most Important Month Ever Invented, and get other people (and yourself) prepared for the lovely upcoming month where people will stare at you like you're crazy while you ramble on about how you're in the process of writing a book in a month.

#x+3. Wish me luck 100 times a day because THIS WILL BE MY FIRST YEAR OF ENGAGING IN NANOWRIMO!!! I've wanted to do it for the past couple of years but I never found out it was NaNoWriMo until it was already a week or so into the month. I've been waiting for this since...probably last November!

Tell as many people about NaNoWriMo as you possibly can, encouraging them to look at the pretty web site and to sign in tomorrow when it's all said and done and prettyful. LOL.

Make up lists of things to do in random places, like walmart.

Write flash fiction. I just discovered it and man is it hard!

Find places that accept flash fiction.

Write about the antagonizing wait to write, about writing... LOL

Decorate your cats for halloween.

Dip leaves in parafin and seal them.

Plan November's menu in advance, mostly consisting of quick-fix, complete meals.

Start hoarding chocolate, or the writing treats and munchies of your choice.

10. Work on your outline, since it's the only writing you're allowed to do on the novel before 1 November 2007.
